* how do you handle high str regions?

* how do you choose when to refuse missions?

* how many restarts do you take before you get a successful campaign up and running?

* how many deaths before you throw in the towel?

* do you think lwotc is well balanced with default options on? I have run into several almost impossible missions with early retals + chosen (recruit retal on big, open map with hunter in particular)

Hi, I am not the author of this journal or am I the best player, but here are my two cents. For high strength regions (str 4 or 5+) I simply ignore them and do missions in other regions, with the exception being supply raids or UFO raids which give large amounts of resources and corpses.

I start every mission that is completeable. If a more lucrative mission comes along later, I cancel the infiltration and re-assign my soldiers to the new one. Generally, my priorities are Scientist/Engineer -> Liberation path -> Alien material -> Intel mission, at least in the early game. I also usually skip any "Raise advent attention" missions as high vigilance is generally a bad thing, and the resources gained from occasionally ambushes aren't worth the loss in completeable normal missions.

Especially at lower difficulties, few starts are truly unworkable. So long as you have 1 engineer by the snd of the 1st month and a mix of 2 or so other scientists/engineers by early mid April you should have enough tech progress and resources to keep up, so long as you optimize your money and research path.

I am willing to lose 2-4 rookies or squaddies and keep going. The hardest part is when you can't consistently get a 2nd or 3rd team going, or when you lose a very high level unit early (such as your first seargent or tech seargent). It's survivable, but if you don't have great start in other ways (such as having only 1 engineer and 1 scientist) it's probably worth a reset.

I tend to avoid recruit because recruit retal is very brutal. Other than that, I haven't had too many problems with the balance. Chosen almost always kill one or two resistance guys on data retal, but that's better than a captured seargent or corporal, and it's not impossible to beat them without losing units.

Glad you posted this. Pretty much agree with all of it. Would add a few things…

You can run also Troop Ambushes in Strength 4+ regions - much like supply raids but easier.

I also skip Recruit retaliations by limiting recruiting.

3 full squads running missions is also my goal through most of the campaign. Along with a couple stealth 2-man squads. The ability to consistently field 3 squads is a great metric. If you can’t do that, your campaign is struggling. I can lose a bunch of guys and still win a campaign. I think for most players (me as well), rage quiting is more likely to end a campaign than decreased capabilities.

I think the game is extremely well balanced given how complex it is and how much success/failure can tip the balance. That being said, I don’t like how finding missions in the first month is crucial to jump starting your campaign.
